NEW ORLEANS, LA -- This year’s Clean ’01, held at the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center in New Orleans lived up to its reputation of attracting professionals from all segments of the garment and textile care industries. The show’s 16,546 attendees were rewarded with access to the products and services of 562 exhibiting companies, showcased in over 270,757 net square feet of floor space.Internationally the show drew 1,566 people from 79 countries. Those with delegations of over 40 were Australia with 66; Brazil, 57; Canada, 415; Germany, 58; Japan, 162; Mexico, 144; and United Kingdom, 46.
Numbers Down – Quality Up
Although a decrease in the number of attendees compared to Clean ’99 was noted by many exhibitors, the exhibitors also noted the quality and professionalism of the attendees. David Cotter, CEO of the Textile Care Allied Trades Association echoed their statements, “Though the sheer number of attendees was down about one-sixth from Clean ’99, quite a few exhibitors have told me and other sponsors that there were quality buyers at the show.”
“It stands to reason,” explained John H. Riddle, president of Riddle & Associates, the Clean Show management company. “In a slower economy, it’s the serious buyers who come to the show to see the products.”
For the first time, Clean ’01 offered entertainment in lieu of the traditional opening ceremony and keynote speaker. Music, mimes and jugglers entertained people in the registration area before the show’s official “clothesline” cutting. The show’s educational sessions – over 40 hours arranged by the show’s sponsoring associations – also grew in popularity this year. Many sessions drew standing room only crowds despite increased seating capacities over Clean ’99.
For those who wished to delve into New Orleans fare, cooking demonstrations by New Orleans chefs and Zydeco dance lessons entertained attendees in the Café Clean, while others who had a hard time tearing themselves from the office could check their email at the Cyber Café.
Clean ’03, the next World Educational Congress for Laundering and Drycleaning – the show’s official title – will be held in Las Vegas, Nevada, August 11-14, 2003. And pending successful negotiations with these cities, Clean will return to Orlando from June 23-26 for Clean ’05; and Clean ’07 will once again be held in New Orleans from June 7-10.
