Neither Las Vegas’ summer heat nor economic slowdowns could dampen spirits of the 16,526 attendees at the World Educational Congress for Laundering and Drycleaning (Clean ‘03.)
The amount of attendees is almost identical to the 16,546 attendance at Clean ‘01 in New Orleans. Of particular note is that the 11,051 people registered as attendees (non-exhibit booth personnel) was 573 more than at Clean ‘01 representing a 5.5 percent increase in that category. These attendees reviewed the products of 538 exhibiting companies.
“By all accounts, it was one of the best [Clean Shows] ever,” according to incoming Clean Executive Committee chairman David H. Cotter, CEO of the Textile Care Allied Trades Association.
Exhibit booth space was sold out at 250,150 net square feet. Included among exhibiting companies were 127 new exhibitors and 28 companies that did not participate in Clean ‘01 but had exhibited at previous Clean Shows. Registered exhibit booth personnel was 5,475, down 593 from Clean ‘01.
“Clean ‘03 had smaller exhibit space to work with than at Clean ‘01,” said John H. Riddle, president of Riddle & Associates, which manages the Clean Show. “This, plus a number of mergers within the industry and tighter budgetary controls among exhibiting companies contributed to an approximate 8 percent decrease in square footage and fewer people working in the booths.
Exhibitors were exuberant in their praise of the show, however. “They said the people were there to buy, and many reported brisk sales through the last minutes of the show and beyond,” Riddle added.
Despite a general downturn in international travel, international attendance at Clean ‘03 was higher than at Clean ‘01. The show drew 1,849 people from outside the U.S, an increase of 283 over Clean ‘01. They represented 81 countries. Those with delegations of 35 or more were Canada with 587; Mexico, 169; Japan, 124; Italy, 120; Australia, 71; United Kingdom, 62; Brazil and Germany, 50 each; Denmark, 48; Netherlands and Spain, 39 each.
Educational sessions, an integral part of the show, drew the largest crowds ever with standing room only at many. Over 30 hours of education were offered by four of the show’s six sponsors, with sessions geared toward each sponsor’s segment of the industry. Open to all show attendees, sessions were sponsored by Coin Laundry Association, International Fabricare Institute, National Association of Institutional Linen Management and Textile Rental Association of America. Other show sponsors are Textile Care Allied Trades Association and Uniform & Textile Rental Service Association.
Clean ‘05 is scheduled for the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, Fla., June 23-26, 2005.
