MT. WASHINGTON, NH – One-hundred years after The Mount Washington Hotel opened its doors to the aristocracy of the industrial revolution, the grande ol’ hotel, an elaborate example of Spanish Renaissance Revival architecture and distinctive world class flare, celebrates a century of grandeur with a renaissance. During that time, the hotel has undergone a transformation that has taken this jewel of New Hampshire’s White Mountains from a summer retreat to a year-round vacation destination.As the Northeast’s highest peak, regal Mt. Washington stands watch over distinguished guests enjoying a plethora of activities from golf, tennis, swimming and horseback riding to Alpine and Nordic skiing at New Hampshire’s largest ski area.
When Joel Bedor, owner of the Mt. Washington Cog Railroad, led a group of local investors in 1991, their goal was to revive a tired landmark, restore it for a second century of elegance in hospitality and make it the anchor of a world class, four-season resort. This required an incredible commitment by the local group to invest in capital improvements, not only to the resort’s high visibility attractions like The Zephyr high-speed chair lift, a new conference center and newly decorated and furnished guest rooms, but also a commitment to improving infrastructure and support facilities as well.
Among the “back-of-the-house” projects central to upholding The Mount Washington Hotel’s grand standards is a newly renovated laundry facility featuring equipment from G.A. Braun, Inc.
In addition to the 200-room main hotel, The Mount Washington Hotel and Resort also produces laundry at its other resort facilities, the 34-room Bretton Arms Country Inn, the 50-room Lodge at Bretton Woods, and 70 condos at The Townhomes at Bretton Woods. There are also four dining areas and three pools producing goods to be laundered.
Prior to the renovation, Mount Washington Hotel & Resort’s main laundry could not handle the daily volume of laundry from all of the facilities making it necessary to outsource some goods.
“We were sending out all the outlet linens and only able to handle the in-house and we still had to send out all the table linens from in house,” said Jose Rivera, laundry supervisor. ”Now it’s quite a change. With the new equipment we can pretty much handle all of it in one shift with six employees, seven days a week.”
Braun sales engineering and design team worked with the hotel’s staff craftsmen and tradesmen to transform a 1950’s era laundry to a smooth running laundry operation processing room linens, room and spa towels, food and beverage linens and staff uniforms. Dan Freitas of Freitas Enterprising, W. Lebanon, ME, a Braun service partner since 1982, managed the removal of the old laundry equipment, the rigging, installation, start-up and training laundry staff on the new equipment.
One operator manages the wash alley that features Braun TopSide Loader washer extractors, the gravity assisted load and unload, split-pocket. One Braun 450- pound TopSide Loader, and one Braun 230-pound TopSide Loader will wash over 1.8 million pounds of laundry annually. The TSL 450 has three 150-pound compartments; the TSL 230 has two 115-pound pockets. The split pocket design while eliminating “sheet roping” also allows flexibility for varying lot sizes and works well with the three 170 pound and two 120 pound Unimac dryers. The facility design and layout also allows space for another TSL 450 to accommodate future resort expansion.
Sheets are taken from the TSL’s to Braun’s flatwork finishing system; a Braun Alpha 700 Spreader Feeder feeds flatwork into the Braun Delta two-roll, 32” steam-heated, deep chest ironer to the Braun Omega Folder/Cross-folder where sheets are neatly stacked on the Braun Large Piece Stacker. One operator feeds all of the resorts towels into the Braun Sigma Small Piece and Towel Folder which folds towels as fast as the operator can feed them. The result is more production in less time in the same amount of space with fewer employees.
“It’s been 14 years, but well worth the wait for our new laundry equipment,” said Suzanne Russell, the hotel’s executive housekeeper. We have tripled our daily production and are now completely self-reliant for processing all of the resort’s table and bed linens. We chose Braun because of their professionalism, the quality of heavy-duty equipment and their service.”
