17: What is
the recommended wash formula for Hospital Laundry considering blood
and medicine stains?
|
September
2002
|
| Answer: For blood work in hospitals
it is recommended that the laundry be flushed several times with
water at or near the human body temperature. In general, keeping
the flushes above 90 degrees and below 100 degrees will ensure that
you won't be setting the blood that is on the textiles. To speed
the removal and reduce the number of flushes, many chemical companies
will inject chemistry into the first flush bath. Generally alkali
is the least expensive way to break up the blood and medicine and
allow it to be flushed quickly out of the washer.
There are many chemical programs available today which could
be talked about, but the standard for many years has been the
tried and proven alkaline / high temperature washing. For that
purpose the following formula is one that has been used for many
years by a number of chemical companies.
